Start with the height you need to reach and choose the gentlest practical slope. A long, rigid ramp with a high-grip walking surface is usually easier to use than a short, steep one.

Measure before you compare
Measure vertically from the ground to the cargo floor, seat, sofa or bed the dog needs to reach. The same ramp can feel easy at one height and uncomfortably steep at another. Follow the manufacturer’s height guidance and weight capacity rather than guessing from product photographs.
Also measure the storage space in your car. Folding and telescoping designs solve different storage problems, but every hinge or sliding section should lock securely during use.
The stability test
A ramp should not bounce, twist or slide as weight moves across it. Look for secure contact at the top, non-slip feet, raised side edges and a walking surface that still grips when damp.
- Confirm that the weight capacity leaves a suitable margin.
- Avoid narrow walking surfaces for large or unsteady dogs.
- Check for finger-safe folding and a secure transport latch.
- Ask a second person to help during the first practice sessions at car height.
Build confidence gradually
Lay the ramp flat, reward calm investigation and practise crossing it in both directions. Raise it only slightly once the surface is familiar. Never pull a reluctant dog up by the collar.
If your dog suddenly avoids steps, jumping or the car, talk with your veterinarian. Equipment may reduce a movement challenge, but it cannot identify the reason for it.

How do I know whether a dog ramp is too steep?
Start with the vertical height the dog must reach and use the manufacturer’s guidance for that height. If your dog hesitates, scrambles or slips, stop and reassess the angle, surface and stability.
Should I choose a folding or telescoping ramp?
Choose according to your storage space and setup routine. In either design, confirm that every hinge or sliding section locks securely and that the ramp remains stable under moving weight.
